Evangelism: a dirty word

I never really understood the phrase, “Don’t shoot the messenger.” Not that the actual meaning escaped me — I am nothing if not literal. What I mean is that I don’t understand why anyone would want to shoot a messenger. They are someone just doing their job. Like someone serving a burger in a fast food restaurant, or doing the tills in a supermarket, or being a receptionist in a hospital ward. Except, of course, all of those people are insulted…
