A walk in the Peak District

Walking heals the soul and the heart, and is good for the body too. That’s why I love walking, particularly in the Peak District, which is only about 45 minutes from my house. Today, I walked 8 miles (13km) around Mam Tor, Hope and Castleton with my dog, Mozart. In this article I will tell you about the walk, giving you a little review of the area and sharing some pictures while I’m at it.

Setting Off

Mam Tor is slightly further than I often go in the Peak District, so it took me an hour to get there in the car. It was a stunning drive round rolling hills and through cute, old villages. I was hoping to park in the National Trust car park (the National Trust is a charity in the UK which runs many of our historic houses and open spaces) as I am a loyal member — I see it as a small contribution towards conservation. Usually, as a member you can park for free (except of course you’ve paid for membership). That didn’t happen today. There was nowhere to say that you’re a member, and no sign to say members could park for free. I wasn’t prepared to pay for parking, so drove down the road a short way and parked on the side of the road in one of the designated parking areas there.

I clambered out of the car, gave the dog a drink, and tied the laces of my walking boots. I looked to the top of the hill. I had decided I would do the hardest part…
